The No-Nonsense Beard Care Routine
3 July 2026Most men either do nothing with their beard or too much. Nothing, and it looks rough, itches, and does whatever it wants. Too much, and there's a shelf of five products, a routine with steps, and still no real result. Neither one works.
A proper beard routine is short. Four things, used properly, beat ten things used badly.
What most men get wrong
The internet sells routines like there's a trophy for complexity. Exfoliating scrubs, leave-in conditioners, serums, sprays, a different product for every stage of the day. Follow all of it and you'll spend more time on your beard than most men spend on the rest of themselves combined.
That's not what makes a beard look kept. A beard looks kept when the skin underneath it is in good shape and the hair on top is under control. That's the core of the job, and it takes a fraction of the effort most routines ask for.
What actually matters
The core routine is four things: oil, balm, a comb and daily cleansing. Get these right and you've covered what a beard actually needs day to day.
Oil conditions the skin underneath. Worked in properly, it can help reduce the dryness, itching and flaking that most men just live with. Balm holds the shape, taming flyaways without stiffness or shine. A comb detangles and sets the line so the beard sits the way it's meant to. Washing keeps the whole thing clean, best done daily with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin rather than whatever's already in the shower.
That covers the beard itself. The exposed skin around the beard line still needs normal skincare. If it feels dry or tight, a straightforward moisturiser earns its place.
How to think about it properly
Stop treating any of this like a checklist with steps to memorise. It's a mindset more than a routine: condition what's underneath, hold what's on top, cleanse it daily, and don't overthink the rest.
Everything above supports one of those three jobs. Nothing else needs to be added unless you are addressing a specific problem or want a particular scent or finish.
What to do
Oil, every morning. After a shower, once your beard's been towel-dried and is still slightly damp, work three to five drops of oil into your palm and massage it into the skin underneath the beard first, then through the hair. A shorter beard needs less, closer to three drops. A longer one can take five or six, since there's more hair between the oil and the skin it's meant to reach. Comb it through afterwards to spread it evenly and set the shape for the day.
Balm, when there's length to hold. If your beard's short, you can likely skip this step for now. Once it's got enough length to move around or lose its shape during the day, start with a small, pea-sized amount, warmed between your palms, and work it through after the oil's had a minute to settle. Add a touch more only if the length genuinely needs it. More balm doesn't mean more hold, it usually just means heavier and waxier. Comb again to finish the line.
Oil and balm aren't a choice between one or the other. Oil conditions the skin and hair, balm holds the result in place, and most beards with any real length benefit from both.
Washing, once a day. A gentle cleanser suited to your skin, massaged in with your fingertips and rinsed thoroughly, cleans the beard and the skin beneath it without the harshness of a strong shampoo or a heavily fragranced soap. Wash again after heavy sweating. Rinse with lukewarm water rather than hot, and pat dry rather than rubbing. If your skin starts to feel dry or irritated, it's usually the product rather than the frequency, so change the cleanser before cutting back on washing.
Signs you're overdoing it. A greasy sheen by midday, oil marking your collar or pillow, or a beard that feels stiff and waxy rather than soft usually means too much product, not too little. Cut back before you add anything else. A beard that looks properly kept never looks like it's wearing product.
That is the whole system: condition the skin, hold the shape and cleanse daily. Get those three jobs right and beard care becomes something you barely have to think about.
Our beard oil and balm are built around the same idea: effective beard care without the unnecessary steps.
